Sound
Most cameras are silent by default, and many have no microphone at all. For sound to play, three things have to be true: the camera has a microphone, audio is switched on in the camera’s own settings, and the camera includes the sound in its stream. When it does, ViewTile plays it in the full-screen view; on the wall, with several cameras on screen, the sound stays off — four shops’ worth of noise at once helps nobody.
Listen on the camera’s page plays only the sound: the picture is not decoded or drawn, so it costs the phone almost nothing. It is meant for a nursery or a workshop, where hearing is enough.
If the picture plays and the sound does not, look in the camera’s own settings page for an audio switch (often under “Audio”, “Audio input” or inside the stream’s settings) and turn it on for the stream ViewTile uses.
Talking through the camera
ViewTile does not do this. Speaking into the phone and having it come out of the camera needs a second channel back to the camera, and the standard defines it in a way that few cameras implement the same way. It is on the list; until then, the camera maker’s own app is the way to talk.
